Happy New Year from Canyon View!

First and foremost, we want to wish everyone a healthy and prosperous 2019! New things are happening here at the clinic. We are currently in the process of expanding the free-weight area of our gym to accommodate our growing client base. 2018 brought us a familiar and brilliant face to our clinic in the addition of Kaung Ko. Previously, he was a member of our team in years past as an aide but has since acquired his DPT degree. He has proven to be a fantastic therapist thus far, and we are excited to see his growth throughout 2019.

Please be on the lookout for a Patient Satisfaction Survey in the near future. These surveys will not only help us understand how we can further advance your recovery, but will also be used to help with clarification from certain insurances.

How to Prevent Falls in Winter
To reduce falls during cold winter months, we should consider several factors. Although we cannot change the weather, we can make sure we have proper footwear and address hip and ankle stability issues.
The first step to avoiding falls during the winter is wearing the right shoes. If you are wondering what the characteristics of a good pair of winter shoes are don’t worry we are here to help. The most challenging obstacles we face during Ellensburg winters are slush and ice. In icy conditions, it is essential to wear shoes that provide proper ankle support and decent traction. Save the flat bottomed sneakers for warmer months and opt for a good pair of winter boots. Walking on icy surfaces always increases the risk of falls, but products such as Yak Tracs may be helpful to minimize risks. Steel tipped trekking poles can also help provide stability for people walking a considerable amount such as those who walk outdoors as a form of exercise.
Besides footwear and traction aids, hip and ankle strength also play a significant role in our ability to catch our balance when we slip on the ice. Strong hip and ankle strength is just as important as proper footwear and ensures the best chance of reducing falls in the harsh weather. If you have poor balance, it is essential to incorporate lateral hip strength exercises and single leg balance drills into your workout routine.

We are starting the new year off big, our strength and conditioning classes are expanding and so are we. We put in an order in to double our strength equipment we expect everything to arrive soon. Be on the lookout for updates as we rearrange the clinic, expand the squat rack and build more lifting platforms. As we strive to meet our goal and grow our class size, we hope to help you reach your goals as well.
